BRING ON THE GUEST ARTISTS!
This month is full of opportunities to take in a guest artist masterclass or concert. At the beginning of the month, pianist Casey Dierlam Tse opens things up with a masterclass on “Cueing as Part of Practice Technique,” followed by a masterclass from saxophonist Kenneth Tse. You can catch both masterclasses and a Guest Artist recital featuring the saxophone and piano duo all on Feb. 1! If vocal music is your forte, you have a chance to experience Metropolitan Opera star baritone, Joo Won Kang leading a masterclass (Feb. 4) as well as performing in concert with faculty member Kyung Kim (Feb. 5).
Mid-term season is here again, which means all large ensembles are in action before the students head out and classes and concerts are paused for Reading Week. The Wind Ensemble kicks things off on Feb. 7 followed by Symphonic Band on Feb. 8; Choirs at Western features a lunch-time series this month with one choir performing daily Feb. 11-13; and the Symphony Orchestra performs a lunchtime concert on Feb. 14.
Opera lovers will have the chance to enjoy the annual Opera and Musical Theatre Gala on Feb. 1, which is free to attend this year! The performance will highlight beloved operatic and musical theatre excerpts from the earliest periods of operatic composition to the present time of opera and musical theatre. Portions of the performance will be accompanied by Western’s Early Music Studio, prepared by musical director Joseph Lanza.
The Fridays at 12:30 concert series hosts two concerts this month. On Feb. 7 the series features composer and violist Kathryn Patricia Cobbler with programmed works reflecting upon elements of the Caribbean immigrant and African diaspora experience. The art explores a multicultural lens and definitions of beauty against a North American colonial landscape. Closing out the month on Feb. 28, Western alumni Sébastien Malette and Allison Wiebe join for a performance of all-Canadian repertoire for bassoon/contrabassoon and piano including movements from A Village of Landscapes by Frank Horvat – a piece that was commissioned by Sébastien Malette and inspired by Michelle Valberg's stirring natural Canadian landscape photography.
If pop music is your jam, you won’t want to miss the return of Pop Industry Day on February 8. Students are working hard on programming – visit the website for details as they are firmed up.

Behind the Events
Despite being the shortest month of the year, each day is filled with learning opportunities and chances for students to perform and highlight their development since the fall term. As February is Black History Month, more opportunities for students to learn and engage are supported by campus-wide events and activities, as well as learning resources.
