Join us for Jazz Girls Day® at the Don Wright Faculty of Music!
University of South Carolina's Jazz Girls Day® seeks to inspire more women to experience jazz education in a welcoming environment by inviting girls for a day filled with learning, playing, and performing. The mission of Jazz Girls Day® is not only to inspire elementary and high school girls to start or continue playing jazz but also to encourage music educators to foster greater female participation in jazz.
The program is intended for instrumentalists at all experience levels in Grades 6 through 12 who identify as female. Educators and accompanying adults are welcome as well!

11 am | Learn blues tunes/Clinic: How to Improvise |
12 pm | Lunch (pizza and pop will be provided) |
12:30 pm | Instrument section breakouts |
1:30 pm | Western Jazz Ensemble performance/educator breakout session |
2:15 pm | Women in Jazz History with Dr. Clark |
3 pm | Jam session (Jazz Girls Day® Theme Song) (parents welcome!) |
3:30 pm | Certificate and t-shirt presentation with each participant |

Free admission. Pre-registration is required before March 28, 2025 at 5pm.
Faculty
Colleen Clark
Founder and Artistic Director of the University of South Carolina’s Jazz Girls Day
Dr. Colleen Clark is the first and only drummer to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts from the world-renowned University of North Texas. Founder and Artistic Director of the University of South Carolina’s Jazz Girls Day, Dr. Clark is an Assistant Professor of Jazz at the University of South Carolina, where she coordinates the small ensembles, conducts a big band and teaches drumset studio and jazz history courses.
Kevin Watson
Artistic Director of the Western University Jazz Ensemble
Dr. Kevin Watson is an Associate Professor of Music Education at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University. Dr. Watson is the Artistic Director of the Western University Jazz Ensemble and is also co-director of the Western Young Winds program. His research focuses on the areas of jazz education and music teacher preparation. Dr. Watson is a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Berklee College of Music.
