BRING ON THE STUDENTS!

As mid-terms approach, October brings the first student performances of the year, from instrumental ensembles to premieres of works written by our talented student composers. The Symphony Orchestra closes out the month with a spooky Halloween-themed concert.

The Fridays at 12:30 concert series features a mix of guest artists and faculty performers, with three duo performances this month including faculty member Denis Jiron, trombone, and guest artist Jonathan Rowsell, tuba; Alma duo featuring guest artists Amelia Daigle, soprano, and Daniel Turner, guitar; and Duo Concertante composed of guest artists Nancy Dahn, violin, and Timothy Steeves, piano.

At the end of the month, we welcome back New Orford String Quartet, Western University’s Official Artists-in-Residence for a culminating concert of their residency. In addition to the variety of learning sessions this residency provides for string students at the faculty, the culminating concert will also provide an opportunity for students to join the quartet members in concert.

Behind the Events

Students are fully in the swing of things by October and first performances come up quickly. Usually there are also a few studio recitals before students head home for Fall Reading Week at the very end of the month.

Our first of a series of special instrument days and open houses take place this month. On October 25, community members are welcome to take part in Oboe Intensive. The event will be led by faculty member Shelley Heron and consist of performance classes and reed-making sessions designed to improve oboe performance skills. Please visit the website for more details as they become available.

Have you bought your opera ticket for next month's production of Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus (The Bat)? We expect this perennially popular and deeply cherished Viennese comedic operetta to sell quickly. Book via the Opera at Western page.
