Duncan McCallum is a PhD candidate in musicology at Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music. Duncan holds a Master of Arts in musicology from Western (2023), and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with a minor in history from McMaster University (2022). His research interests lie in popular music and sound studies, especially as they relate to Canadian music. Duncan’s dissertation focuses on Canadian identity and nationalism in the music of the 1990s “CanRock” revival.
During his time at McMaster, Duncan served as president of both the McMaster Music Society (2020–22) and McMaster Concert Band (2021–22). At Western, he completed a student research fellowship in ecomusicology at the Centre for Climate Change, Sustainable Livelihoods and Health (2023–24), where he examined popular music’s role as environmental activism. Outside of academia, Duncan performs regularly with rock and jazz groups throughout southern Ontario, and has even performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
