Dr. Laura Curtis holds a PhD in Music Education from Western University. Her Doctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, focused on the ways in which involuntarily childless women experience community and develop self-empowerment through singing in the Childless Voice Choir in the UK. She also holds a Masters degree in Music Education from Western University, an Honours Bachelor of Music degree from McMaster University, and a Diploma in Music Performance (voice) from Cambrian College.
Dr. Curtis’s research interests include the social and affective impact of collective singing on individuals and groups who experience marginalization and oppression, the impact of infertility on the female singing voice, and lifelong musical learning in community and institutionalized learning contexts.
Since 2004, Laura has established herself as a self-employed private instructor of voice, piano, and music theory. She is a lecturer in Music Education at Western University. She also holds a position as lecturer in Music Education at Brock University, and is Music Director of the Addison Women’s Choir in Cambridge, Ontario.
In addition to her work in music education, Laura’s passion for community engagement through music is nurtured by her involvement with Choral Canada as a member of various committees, and with the Orangeville and District Music Festival as an organizing committee member.
