Jeffrey Komar is a sought-after violist and chamber musician based in London, Ontario. In 2023, He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in viola performance at Western University, where he studied under violist Sharon Wei of the New Orford String Quartet. His research into collaborations between non-Indigenous musicians and the Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot) First Nations communities in southwestern Alberta was funded in part by a Doctoral Award scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This past June, Jeff was invited to present his doctoral research as part of the 2024 American Viola Society Festival at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, California.
Over the years, Jeff has shared the stage with many esteemed musicians such as Scott St. John, Simon Docking, Thomas Wiebe, Annette-Barbara Vogel, and Ensemble Made in Canada. He is an active chamber/orchestral musician and has played with ensembles across Ontario including (but not limited to) the Stratford Symphony Orchestra, London Symphonia, Arcady Ensemble, The International Symphony Orchestra of Sarnia/Port Huron, and Magisterra Soloists. He often collaborates with his wife and fellow musician, soprano Lauren Bryant-Monk, co-curating concerts of art song and vocal chamber music under the banner of Red Door Concerts.
As well as being an accomplished performer, Jeff is a dedicated music educator. He teaches strings and chamber music with Forest City String School and El Sistema Aeolian in London, Ontario. Since 2022, he has held various part-time teaching appointments at Western University’s departments of Music Performance Studies and Music Education. Additionally, he teaches violin, viola, and piano with Maple & Spruce Music Academy, offering one-on-one instruction to students of all ages and ability levels. In his spare time, he enjoys drinking coffee, cooking, and vying for the affections of his two cats, Rita and Pearl.
