Emily Abrams Ansari at Juilliard 2016-17 C.V. Starr Doctoral Forums
On Apr. 18, 2017, Music History Dr. Emily Abrams Ansari was invited to give a lecture as part of the Juilliard 2016-17 C.V. Starr Doctoral Forums. Ansari presented “Cold War Politics, American Exceptionalism, and an Eastman-Juilliard Rivalry.” The paper looked at the careers of former Eastman president Howard Hanson and former Juilliard president William Schuman in the context of their contributions to the cultural Cold War. Ansari argued that these two composer-administrators' compositions and their promotions of American music in the US and overseas effectively advanced mainstream Cold War conceptions of American exceptionalism.
