DMA - Language Requirement

A language requirement is applicable to DMA students in voice and in some cases in collaborative piano. Voice students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in three languages other than English. Students in other specializations may benefit from foreign language study for their DMA monograph. In most cases, these will be French, German, and either Italian or Spanish. Most voice students admitted to the program already have proficiency in at least one or two languages other than English, and so have already fulfilled at least part of this requirement. Normally the language requirement, where applicable, is fulfilled before the Comprehensive Examination.

Students who are required to obtain further language proficiency may fulfill this requirement in a number of ways, including:

  • demonstrating existing proficiency
  • completing a full year of language study at the undergraduate level.

To register for an undergraduate language course, please complete the form which requires signatures from the course instructor, the department offering the course, the Chair of your Advisory Committee, and the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies).
