Vice Provost (Academic Programs) Susan Lewis joins Western, appointed Professor of Musicology
Accomplished academic and administrative leader Susan Lewis joined Western as vice-provost (academic programs) on September 2, 2022 for a five-year term. Concurrent with this appointment, Dr. Lewis will also hold an appointment in the Don Wright Faculty of Music as tenured Professor of Musicology in the Department of Music Research and Composition.
Dr. Lewis notes, "I believe that creativity is at the heart of innovation. Having taught and mentored hundreds of students over the past two decades, I see my role as an educational architect, who guides students to new discoveries as we explore ways that music transforms our lives and our planet."
As a scholar of early modern European music, her interests have grown and been shaped by many collaborations and partnerships with colleagues in Canada and around the world. She is an active researcher and author of four books on music printing, Italian madrigals, the composer Claudio Monteverdi, and Baroque music. Across her research, she is focused on questions of musical and cultural networks, translation and reception, and the broader intellectual and artistic frameworks in which music flourished in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Dr. Lewis was formerly Acting Vice-President & Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic Planning at the University of Victoria where she has also served as a faculty member in the School of Music since 2001. Leading up to her current executive roles, Susan held increasingly senior positions at the University of Victoria including as Director of the School of Music and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
"Susan has an impressive track record of leadership in advancing the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization, and has shown great commitment toward enhancing and strengthening experiential and work-integrated learning for students,” said Florentine Strzelczyk, provost and vice-president (academic). "I look forward to working with Susan on pursuing our strategic priorities."
The portfolio of the Vice-Provost (Academic Programs) includes Western Continuing Studies and the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Programs and services within the portfolio focus on students and help to fulfill Western's commitment to providing students with an exemplary academic experience.
