Sylvia Luo (Xinyao Luo) is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Vocal Performance at Western University, Canada. Her research interests center on Bel Canto singing, vocal linguistics, intercultural music education, and cross-linguistic vocal pedagogy.
Her performing career spans both Asia and North America. During her doctoral studies, she portrayed the Queen of the Night in the university’s production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, demonstrating exceptional technical mastery and stage presence in the opera’s demanding coloratura passages. She earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Regina, where she presented two solo recitals, performed as a pianist with the university jazz band, and frequently appeared as a soloist with choral ensembles, gaining extensive experience in both solo and collaborative performance. Sylvia holds dual bachelor’s degrees from Chongqing University in Vocal Performance (with a minor in piano) and in International Economics and Trade. While an undergraduate, she won multiple vocal competitions and, in 2017, was invited to participate in the Vocal Summer Program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada. Her graduation recital featured selections from The Phantom of the Opera, showcasing her refined artistry and dramatic expressiveness.
