*Update Sept. 23 - Due to road closures around Talbot College and the Music Building, the Beginning Band Program session scheduled for this Saturday Sept. 24 has been cancelled. We will return Oct. 1st.

Western’s Beginning Band Instrument Program is intended for students in grades six through nine who are just starting to a play a band instrument. The program will teach students how to put together and care for their instrument, how to play their first notes, and will offer a group band performance experience, all in a fun and supportive atmosphere. This instruction is meant to serve as a supplement to that provided by the students' school music program. The Beginning Band program teachers will be a select group of students from the Western University Instrumental Music Education program, supervised by Western University Music Faculty members Dr. Colleen Richardson and Dr. Kevin Watson.

Health and Safety protocols will be communicated prior to the first program meeting.

Who can participate?

The program will provide instruction for instrumental students in grades six, seven, eight, or nine. Students who are beginning one of the following instruments are eligible to participate in the program: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Saxophone (all types), Horn, Trumpet, Baritone Horn/Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba, and Percussion.

Requirements

Students will need to bring their own instrument each week. Many schools will allow the student to sign out an instrument – please ask the student's school music teacher if this will be possible.
