Richard Burrows is a distinguished percussionist, celebrated for his dynamic performances and innovative approach to contemporary classical music. With a career spanning over two decades, Burrows has firmly established himself as a leading figure in the percussion community, renowned for his versatility, technical prowess, and unwavering commitment to advancing the art form.

Burrows embarked on his musical journey at a young age, ultimately earning two master's degrees from the University of Toronto in both performance and music education. Under the mentorship of esteemed percussionists Russell Hartenberger, Robin Engelman and Bev Johnston, he developed a solid foundation that propelled his future successes.

Burrows is a founding member of TorQ Percussion Quartet, an ensemble celebrated for its innovative performances and educational outreach. Since its inception in 2004, TorQ has captivated audiences worldwide with its eclectic repertoire and engaging stage presence, performing at prestigious venues and festivals across North America and Europe. This includes concerto performances with Toronto Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and many more. The quartet has garnered critical acclaim for its contributions to contemporary music and have recorded numerous albums including collaborations with NEXUS and Elora Singers.

In addition to his work with TorQ, Burrows is a dedicated solo artist and educator. He has premiered numerous works by leading composers, expanding the percussion repertoire and pushing the boundaries of the instruments. His solo performances, characterized by a blend of technical mastery and expressive depth, have captivated audiences and critics alike.

Burrows is the artistic director for the Open Ears Festival, an annual event dedicated to celebrating adventurous sound and innovative music. As a performer and collaborator, he has played a pivotal role in presenting cutting-edge works to the festival’s audiences, enhancing its reputation as a hub for contemporary music exploration.

Beyond the concert hall, Burrows is a passionate advocate for music education and community engagement. His teaching philosophy emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and the importance of musical exploration. He frequently conducts workshops, masterclasses, and educational programs, inspiring young musicians and fostering a love for percussion.
