Adam Patrick Bell to join Western as Associate Professor of Music Education
It is with great excitement that we announce the appointment of Dr. Adam Patrick Bell as Associate Professor of Music Education in the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Dr. Bell will start working at Western University in July and will be nominated by Western for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) position in the Fall.
Dr. Bell is a prolific scholar whose career has been marked by a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, and in particular, disability justice. His primary research focus lies in the confluence of music, disability studies, and technology, and his background as a music producer and multi-instrumentalist (drum kit, guitar, bass, electronics) informs his scholarship examining accessible ways of making music with technology. Since 2017, Dr. Bell has received four SSHRC grants as a Principal Investigator to support his research on disability-led music-making communities and designing accessible musical instruments.
Dr. Bell comes to us from the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, music technology, popular music, and research methods. He also served as co-chair of the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization Committee, where he co-authored the School’s Action Plan to combat racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination. He is the author of The Music Technology Cookbook: Ready-Made Recipes for the Classroom, and Dawn of the DAW: The Studio As Musical Instrument, both published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Bell’s engagement in research areas that cross our three departments will allow him to help us move in exciting new research directions as a faculty.
We thank the members of the CRC Search Committee for their significant work bringing about this important hire for our faculty, as well as the members of the various Music Education committees involved in the process.
