Three of the five winners selected in the Canada Region of the Met Opera Laffont Competition have connections to the Don Wright Faculty of Music.

Current Master's student Angela Gjurichanin, soprano, who is studying with Jackie Short; alumna Laura Nielsen, BMus'15, Artist Diploma'16, soprano, who studied with Torin Chiles and Jennifer Moir; and Chelsea Kolic, who is a twice past participant in our international opera program Accademia Europea Dell’Opera, led by Artistic Director Sophie Louise Roland.

The nationwide vocal competition was founded in 1954 as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, now named the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. It is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. It is sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera National Council, including members and hundreds of volunteers from across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Congratulations to all our singers, and best wishes in the next round taking place in early 2022.
