Fred Pattison Piano Competition Winner 2021
Congratulations to Ian Pepper, winner of the 2020-2021 Fred Pattison Piano Competition.
The other two student finalists selected to perform were Winnie Zheng and Tiffany Bui.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, each finalist pre-recorded their performance, and students were given the opportunity to view privately online on February 5, 2021. A pre-recorded recital by last year’s winner, Terrence Wu, was also shared.
This year's competition was adjudicated online by James Parker, who also worked virtually with piano students on February 6 as part of the annual event.
Proceeds from the Fred Pattison Award Fund support the Fred Pattison Piano Award at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, which is to be awarded to the winner of an annual piano competition. In addition to receiving a cash award, the winner gives a public performance the following academic year.
Dr. Pattison was Western’s former Head of Chemistry (1959-1965) and Director of Student Health Services (1973-1988). He passed away in August 2010. Dr. Pattison had a great passion for the piano and spent many hours enjoying performances in von Kuster Hall at the Faculty of Music. This award reflects his love of music and his desire to reward excellence in piano performance. 2008-2009 was the inaugural year for this competition.
A public performance of all 2021 competition finalists, and last year’s winner’s recital, will be livestreamed in March 2021.
