Doctoral candidate Yumi Jang selected for Toronto Summer Music Academy's Emerging Artist Program
Congratulations to doctoral candidate Yumi Jang who was one of only two pianists selected internationally as a full-tuition Fellow for this summer’s prestigious Toronto Summer Music (TSM) Academy – Emerging Artist Program (Chamber Music Institute stream). The highly selective enrolment allows Academy Fellows to build lasting professional relationships with their mentors and peers. Fellows receive advanced training and mentorship from internationally acclaimed artists from across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Yumi will collaborate with a distinguished group of musical peers from top institutions worldwide (including the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, University of Southern California, Rice University, and Yale University), and will also have the honour of working with resident artists including the New Orford String and Pacifica String Quartets, and Angela Cheng. Faculty member and renowned violist Sharon Wei, member of Western’s official Artists in Residence New Orford String Quartet is among the invited mentors participating in the Chamber Music stream.
Yumi will graduate with her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Western University this June, where she studies with Dr. Kyung Kim, and was also a graduate of the Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University. While at Western, Yumi was grand prize winner of the New York International Music Competition, the American International Music Competition in Cleveland, the “London, UK” Grand Prize Virtuoso Music Competition, American Protégé Music Competition, Golden Classical Music Awards “Los Angeles,” Charleston International Music Competition, Quebec Music Competition in Canada, and the Hong Kong Asia Open International Piano Competition. These victories earned her debuts in renowned venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Royal Albert Hall in the United Kingdom, Mirabell Palace in Austria, and Seoul Arts Center in South Korea.
We are also proud to note that Western alumna Hillary Tufford, MMus’17, mezzo-soprano, is also joining the Toronto Summer Music Academy this summer as part of the Art of Song stream.
The TSM Academy – Emerging Artist Program balances study and performance: Academy Fellows participate in one-on-one coaching, self-directed ensemble rehearsals, group mentoring, and masterclasses. Performance opportunities include TSM Festival mainstage concerts, special events, and our popular ReGeneration Concert Series, in which the Academy Fellows perform on stage with their mentors.
