Audition Instruments and Program Requirements

We strive to make auditions at the Don Wright Faculty of Music a welcoming, friendly and enjoyable experience. Audition requirements can vary by instrument or program, as detailed below.

Bachelor of Music Auditions

Applicants are expected to play two contrasting pieces. Memorization is not required.

Instruments: Euphonium, French Horn, Trombone / Bass Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba

Instruments: Cello, Double Bass, Viola, Violin

Applicants are expected to play two contrasting pieces. Memorization is not required.

Instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet / Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone

Applicants are expected to play three pieces as listed below. Percussion instruments for auditions will be provided. Memorization is not required.

  • 1 standard timpani etude
  • 1 snare drum solo displaying rudiments and/or orchestral techniques
  • 1 mallet solo demonstrating 2 and/or 4 mallet techniques
Applicants are expected to sing three contrasting songs with at least one of these being in a language other than English. Musical Theatre and Contemporary Commercial Music repertoire are welcome.

Bachelor of Arts Interviews and/or Auditions

An in-person interview is required, but those living more than 250 km from London, ON, or by special permission, may request a Zoom interview. A recording is not expected.
Applicants are expected to submit recordings of two pieces (classical and/or popular music) that represent their technical, artistic and musical abilities. Those applying with recordings of classical music should review the audition requirements for the Bachelor of Music Auditions above. Those applying with recordings of popular music should review the requirements for Popular Music Studies below.

Applicants are expected to submit recordings of two popular music tracks that represent their technical, artistic and musical abilities. Tracks may be covers of pre-existing material or original material. Those applying as laptop musicians, songwriters and/or producers are expected to submit two recordings that demonstrate skill in songwriting and/or desktop production.
