Music Education at Western
The Music Education department at Western is dedicated to world-leading research and teaching in music education. Our graduates are well educated musicians and scholars with a passion for and commitment to music education. As visionary musicians and educators they possess the musical, pedagogical and technological skills, knowledge and understandings necessary to advance music education around the world.
Our Music Education community is committed to scholarly work of various forms, from research to practice, to pedagogical work, to artistic production, to creative endeavours. In all, both faculty and students strive for work that is meaningful and has an impact both on the educational and musical community as well as in academic circles. Our diverse faculty and students are presenting and workshopping across Canada and all over the world. Our faculty is widely published and constantly leading the way in music education thought and practice.

- October 2025 - Western Accessible Instruments Lab receives funding from Canada Foundation for Innovation
- March 2024 - Music Education professor adam patrick bell named Canada Research Chair in Music, Inclusion and Accessibility
- August 2023 - PhD student Joel Martinez-Lorenzana leads Music Making Creative Lab in El Salvador
- October 2022 - PhD graduate Kelly Bylica earns Outstanding Dissertation Award from Council for Research in Music Education
- May 2022 - Darren Hamilton, MMus’16, named 2022 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year
- May 2022 - Mark Ramsay, Assistant Professor of Music Education and Coordinator of Choral Activities at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, was Co-chair for the Choral Canada/Choirs Ontario Podium 2022 conference.
- August 2021 - Undergraduate Music Education students Sara Shifaw and Cynthia Lê published their research findings on how Four Universities in Canada are addressing issues of equity and inclusion, funded through a 2021 Undergraduate Summer Research Internship with a generous grant from Western University.
