Two students earn scholarships to Percussive Arts Society International Convention

Congratulations to BMus percussion students Samantha Grover and Anang Binesi Vlotaros on earning PASIC Scholarships from the Percussive Arts Society this year.

The PASIC Scholarship program gives percussion students the opportunity to attend PASIC, one of the largest drum and percussion events in the world. When proudly sharing the news of his studio members, percussion ensemble director and faculty member Richard Burrows noted this "is a highly competitive application process from schools across North America."

This year, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) takes place in Indianapolis, IN from November 12-15 at the Indiana Convention Center. It features concerts, clinics, panels and presentations given by the finest artists showcasing all areas of percussion — drum set, marching, keyboard, symphonic, world, recreational, education, music technology, new music, and health & wellness.

As a percussionist, Vlotaros notes "I think what we do as musicians is very special and unique. The way we connect, learn, and experience things. There is so much room for exploration and emotion in what I do, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given."

On the upcoming experience, Grover notes "I am very proud to have received this scholarship! It has really proven to me that my hard work, dedication, and practice have been recognized and valued. Studying at Western University has not only allowed me to grow on my technical playing abilities, but has also broadened my views on music genres, mindsets, and has helped shape me as a person."

She goes on to note, "To current and future music students: take it one moment at a time; pursuing a music program can feel overwhelming at times and be a very vulnerable experience, but it's a unique and rewarding experience! Hard work doesn’t go unnoticed; with determination and persistence, you can achieve great goals - as was the case for me!"
