Department of Music Education Graduate Course Calendar

9505a/b History of Music Education. A comparative and historical survey of music education as practised in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Emphasis is on identifying common origins as well as similarities and differences in the ways music education has been approached and implemented in those countries. Half course.

9531a/b Empirical and Qualitative Research in Music Education. The empirical portion of this course introduces research methodology, experimental design, and statistical analysis of data, with special reference to empirical research in the psychology of music. The qualitative portion critically examines exemplary qualitative studies and explores qualitative methods and techniques to investigate and report inquiries in music education. Half course. 9539a/b Historical and Philosophical Inquiry in Music Education. An introduction to philosophical and historical methodology with reference to music education literature and its problems. Half course.

9548a/b Cultural and Social Perspectives in Music Education. This course explores issues of diversity in music education curriculum. Topics include the acquisition of cultural, social and musical knowledge, contemporary debates in the field, and current practice, as well as the planning and implementation of music materials for a pluralistic society. Half course.

9553a/b Music Technology in Music Education Graduate Seminar. Essential topics related to the teaching of music in technology-based or technology-enhanced learning situations. Primary focus areas include production and manipulation of music in digital formats, music in multimedia settings and music teaching in distributed learning environments. Half course.

9570a/b Advanced Conducting. Score study of selected instrumental works with an emphasis on analysis and interpretive problems. Half course.

9576a/b Advanced Choral Techniques. Advanced study and preparation of choral scores with emphasis on major works of the choral literature. Half course.

9577a/b History of the Philosophy and Psychology of Music. The history of the development of philosophical and psychological studies concerning music and musical learning from Ancient Greece to the present.

9579a/b The Reflective Practitioner in the Elementary Music Classroom. This course is designed to deepen students' awareness of issues and the components of a comprehensive music curriculum for elementary school children. Topics will include examination of the ways in which teaching philosophies illuminate practice, emerging trends, the role of music in children's lives as well as design of instructional materials and procedures. A course intended to teach the pianist and orchestral instrumentalist the principles of ensemble playing as well as the literature of Solo Instrumental Works and Chamber Music. Designed for students majoring in Piano or Orchestral Instruments in Honors Performance and the Masters in Literature and Performance degree. BY AUDITION. Half course.

9507y Contemporary Techniques and Repertoire. An introduction to contemporary music from 1945 and after, through preparation and performance of appropriate repertoire in a masterclass setting. Half course.This course will incorporate oral presentations involving analysis of performance practice issues along with related artistic and cultural topics. BY AUDITION. Half course.

9564a/b/y Chamber Orchestra. University of Western Ontario Chamber Orchestra, 30-piece chamber orchestra. Fall term consists of two programs of chamber orchestra and chamber music repertoire spanning the last 400 years. Winter term consists of working with UWO's renowned Opera Workshop in fully staged operatic presentations. In addition the UWOCO participates regularly in performances and readings of student compositions. Half course.
