Biography

As a pianist engaged in solo, chamber music, vocal accompaniment, opera, and ballet, Taiwanese young artist Sabrina Pei-Yu Chen is dedicated to collaboration across diverse fields and is passionate about exploring the vast potential of the piano.

Chen is now pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Solo Piano in the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University in Canada, with full scholarship plus teaching assistantship support, and is the recipient of the Government Scholarship to Study Abroad (GSSA) from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA). She has studied with Emile Naoumoff, Sofya Gulyak, Chia-Hui Tsai, Chun-Ju Yen, and currently studies under Dr. Kyung Kim.

During her master’s studies at Indiana University, Chen was a full-scholarship student and served as an Associate Instructor in Piano. She developed a deep interest in ballet accompanying and collaborated closely with dance faculty, including Sasha Janes, Michael Vernon, Christian Claessens, and Sarah Worth. She presented her master’s degree recital in April 2025 and was selected as a New Star Artist by the Ming-Shih Music Collective, giving her 2025 solo recital in July. She presented her Doctoral Piano Recital, “B Minor Sonatas Through the Ages,” in London, Ontario in April 2026, followed by a recital under the same title in Taipei in June 2026.

During her undergraduate years, Chen graduated at the top of her year and was admitted as the top-ranked candidate to the TNUA piano master’s program. She is an enthusiastic chamber musician and collaborator, served as the pianist for the TNUA Choir, Wind Ensemble, Opera Studio, and multiple vocal projects, including several original Mandarin musicals at the Taipei Fringe Festival. Her love for vocal repertoire led her to win the Best Collaborative Pianist Award at the TNUA Emerging Young Artist Competition.

Her competition achievements include: Winner at the 2020 TNUA Emerging Young Artist Competition. Second Prize in the International Piano Duo Competition by Taiwan Piano Studio. Selected performer for TNUA’s Fall–Winter Concert Series in 2021. First Prize in the 2021 Taipei Student Music Competition, College Piano Solo Division. Fourth Prize in the 2022 National Student Music Competition, College Piano Solo Division A. Best Collaborative Pianist Award at the 2022 TNUA Emerging Young Artist Competition. She is also the recipient of the 2022 Kawai Music Scholarship.
