Biography

Duncan McCallum is a PhD candidate in musicology at Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music. Duncan holds a Master of Arts in musicology from Western (2023), and a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with a minor in history from McMaster University (2022). His research interests lie in popular music and sound studies, especially as they relate to Canadian music. Duncan’s dissertation focuses on Canadian national identity in the music of the 1990s “CanRock” era. He currently holds the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2026–27).

During his time at McMaster, Duncan served as president of both the McMaster Music Society (2020–22) and McMaster Concert Band (2021–22). At Western, he completed a student fellowship at the Centre for Climate Change, Sustainable Livelihoods and Health (2023–24), where he researched popular music and environmental activism through the lens of ecomusicology. He currently serves as graduate student representative of the American Musicological Society’s New York State–St. Lawrence Chapter.
