Hailing from Montreal, clarinetist Marie Johnson is the second clarinet chair with London Symphonia (formerly Orchestra London Canada). Much in demand as an orchestral clarinetist, Marie performs frequently with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Windsor Symphony. She was a regular substitute clarinetist with the Thunder Bay Symphony from 2002 to 2011 and played second and bass clarinet with Orchestre symphonique de Québec for their 2000-01 season.
A versatile performer, Marie enjoys a wide variety of musical collaborations. She was a founding member and bass clarinetist with the clarinet quartet ƒƒourtissimo, active in the London area from 2003 to 2016. As a soloist, she performed the Canadian premiere of the Rautavaara Clarinet Concerto with Orchestra London, and the Krommer Concerto for two clarinets with the London Community Orchestra. At the Don Wright Faculty of Music she was a guest performer with both the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble and she appears on several chamber music programs every year.
Her teachers have included Robert Crowley at the Université de Montréal (BMus, MMus) and Dieter Klöcker at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany (Aufbaustudium - graduate performance degree). Highly regarded as an inspiring and dedicated teacher, Marie served on the music faculty at Toronto’s Upper Canada College for nine years and she has been a clarinet and bass clarinet instructor with Western’s Don Wright Faculty of Music since 2007.
