Faculty Research Showcase
The Don Wright Faculty of Music is pleased with another successful annual Music Research Showcase
On October 16th, Vice President of Research Dr. John Capone welcomed a packed audience in our new performance space, von Kuster Hall to celebrate the Don Wright Faculty of Music Research Day.
The program began with Annette Barbara Vogel (violin) and Durval Cesetti (piano), opening the day with Romantic Violin Sonatas from Europe and Brazil. This was followed by Dr. Peter Frank walking the audience through “Reconciling Bottom-Up Harmonic Function with Top-Down Schenkerian Theory within Fugal Analysis.” Dr. Kari Veblen, and Dr. Stephanie Horsley brought the joy of Elvis Presley to everyone attending during their presentation “Learning and Identity in Popular Music: Becoming the King in Ontario. -And newly minted Ph.D. Michael Fitzpatrick explained “J. S. Bach’s Modal Chorale Preludes for Organ using Schenkerian theory.” The exquisitely beautiful playing of Stephan Sylvestre brought us "Brahms’ Solo Piano Works: The Middle Years in Pörtschach” which was followed by Dr. Cathy Benedict and Dr. Patrick Schmidt presenting their research project “Urban Music Teaching: An In-service Model for Pluralistic Encounters.” Graduate students participated in a poster session where multiple topics were investigated. Finally, featured throughout the day was an interactive installation by Musicology and Popular Music Professor, Jay Hodgson, entitled “Raving For Introverts" where one was able to compose music — in this case, banging techno music — simply by walking through the chromacoustic/lumacoustic chamber.
