Director Tom Diamond’s acclaimed productions include premieres of Chan Ka Nin’s Iron Road (Dora Award) and Timothy Sullivan’s Florence The Lady with The Lamp (Chalmers Award), seven productions for Pacific Opera Victoria and nine for the Canadian Opera Company. His production of Squonk was an off-Broadway hit which transferred to Broadway where it won the American Theatre Wing's Hewes Award. He was the Resident Director/Dramaturg at Tapestry New Opera for a decade where he has staged many world premieres including Omar Daniel’s The Shadow. Upcoming for Tapestry this May; Aaron Gervais and Colleen Murphy’s The Enslavement and Liberation of Oksana G, an opera about human trafficking.
His first short film, The Perfect Match, premiered at Harbourfront’s World Stage Festival. It has been seen at film festivals across North American and was nominated for Best Experimental Film at the Miami Short Film Festival.
Mr. Diamond is one of the most renowned and sought after operatic acting coaches on the continent. He is the primary Acting Coach for the COC Ensemble Studio. He also works regularly at the Atelier Lyrique in Montreal, COAA at Western University, The Glen Gould Studio at the Royal Conservatory and Indiana University (upcoming Handel’s Rodelinda, his third Handel opera for IU). He has also taught for Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Programme, COSI in Italy, The New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, McGill and Dalhousie Universities. He is also the Acting Coach at Wendy Nielsen’s St Andrew’s Workshop (New Brunswick).
For the past three seasons, Mr Diamond has directed at Sarasota Opera (Flying Dutchman, The Golden Cockerel, Fidelio) and has also recently directed productions for Opera Carolina (Turandot, Fidelio), and Calgary Opera (Lakme), Manitoba Opera (Turandot) and Pacific Opera Victoria (Britten’s Midsummer Night's Dream).
Upcoming this season and next are productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Onegin and Romeo and Juliet.
Mr. Diamond is perhaps most often recognized for his participation in the Gemini Award-winning television series Bathroom Divas.
